YES Girls

This year YES and partners launched two successful ventures aimed at reaching girls from target communities in Boston, MA and Chesapeake, VA. Radio-LOG (R-LOG) is a girl’s radio station located in Boston, MA. It is an initiative of the LOG School (a Federated Dorchester Neighborhood Houses agency) led by Larry Mayes and shepherded by the Mayor of Boston – the Honorable Tom Menino. This bold move empowers girls and allows them to address meaningful issues they face both in their community and in urban youth culture. YES developed the curricula and consulted on the program content and execution for the LOG School.

YES also launched a girls media program in Chesapeake, VA designed to reach girls, particularly those from various low income housing communities, youth in foster care, and youth involved in the juvenile justice process. The girls are trained in music production, radio broadcasting, video production, and graphic design.

Both programs feature hands-on training in media literacy, technology and communication and are designed to increase the confidence and esteem levels of girls and help them gain power over their images in the media marketplace. More to come…
